Black Mirrors
A mirror is a device for seeing yourself seeing yourself… A convex looking glass enables the viewer to possess a wider-than-normal field of view and to experience their own presence within the space in a new way. I employ the mirror as a means of re-situating the spectator in their environment while simultaneously revealing and obscuring information about the context of their experience. My task as an artist is to create and/or modify environments and through the process of introducing mirrors into the worlds I create, I can reveal to the viewer their own being within that world.
Each mirrored form offers a slightly different viewing experience dependent on the subtle variations in material and geometric quality. No reflection is a faithful recreation or distortion-free image. The environment reflected back to the viewer is not the same one he or she inhabits, thus the subject exists in two places at once.
While not overtly durational, the mirror pieces unfold over time through persistent shifting in perspective, movement, and interaction. The black mirror forms feel like objects staring back at the viewer, echoing devices of divination or surveillance. And not unlike our personal digital devices and technologies of choice, there is a seductive quality of these objects that draw the viewer in while at the same time concealing their inner secrets. Each object becomes something enigmatic, magical, suspicious, and mysterious; a dark world of its own.
